Mike wrapped up his S&S-powered FXR project last month and we checked in with him to see how he likes it. Any surprises during break in? After the initial 60 mile ride, my reinforced front fender snapped off and the bike also sprung a leak from the inner primary. The front fender wasn’t as big of a surprise. I had switched over to a steel version which I thought might be too much for the stock mounts. The inner primary was a factory defect on a NOS part we put a temporary fix on for EDR. It still leaked a little which was frustrating on a bike that should be air tight. How’d it do on EDR? This bike is everything you might want when traveling to baja. More storage, better suspension, lower compression (to work well with Mexican gas), and better blockage from the wind. Aside from the primary leak, the bike handled and performed better than expected. The only difficulty I faced was falling in line at group pace and not riding the bike like an asshole. The bike definitely likes an angry ride. Would you change anything ? After putting around 1,500 miles on the bike, I do think it needs a few mods to get it dialed in the rest of the way. A new front fender is in the works and I do need to space the front fairing out a little bit to keep it from rubbing on the trees. I’m debating on whether I should soften the front suspension or not. Once I check the sag with an extra rider, I will make that decision. The last thing that needs a adjusting is the gearing. Unless I am going between 80-100 in 6th, the motor is definitely being lugged. Conclusion? The S&S 111 and Baker 6 speed outperformed all of my expectations and the bike has way more power and top speed than I will ever need. Suspension and chassis wise, there’s not much more I can do to have a better handling H-D. I still have an affinity for Sportsters. The Lobo Negro is definitely the right tool for the job of mowing down big miles on any road in any condition.
