It’s been a journey to get Lane Splitters to market, but they're finally here, in stock and shipping as of today!
We already had the DOT thing wired for the USA, but the requirements and red tape needed to meet European standards were new to us and it took a while to navigate it all successfully. It would have been easier if we just went to one of the huge helmet manufacturers and had them private label something off the shelf for us, but we wanted full control of the design, tooling and responsibility. The finished product fits within our less-is-more design aesthetic but offers a handful of contemporary features and benefits that today’s rider expects.
The Lane Splitter is our first helmet to receive both Europe’s ECE R22.05 and U.S. DOT safety certifications. These standards involve subjecting a helmet to violent forces across a range of impact angles and velocities. Sophisticated machinery collect data from these tests to determine a helmet’s ability to reduce impact forces and improve the wearer’s safety in the event of a crash. The European Union’s ECE R22.05 is widely regarded as the highest safety standard for motorcycle helmets in the world. Creating one new helmet that does it all wasn’t easy, and took our product team and Original-Equipment Manufacturer years of R&D to get right. With styling inspired by ‘80s top fuel drag racers, the Lane Splitter’s advancements in fit, comfort and safety take Biltwell headgear into a whole new direction. To meet both ECE and DOT standards, the Lane Splitter had to be tough. To clear our own high bar for all-day riding comfort, it had to be light. To merge these opposing traits into one helmet, we relied on some tried-and-true material and manufacturing technologies: an injection-molded ABS outer shell for durability, expanded polystyrene foam safety liner for impact attenuation, and the softest hand-stitched fleece Lycra comfort liner in the game. Of course, the latter is removable for cleaning and replacement, and features mesh pockets in the cheek pads for aftermarket sound/communication speaker systems. Other features include a scratch-resistant molded clear polycarbonate shield with anodized aluminum hinge hardware, removable chin spoiler under the chin bar to redirect airflow, and ample front, side and rear venting to dissipate moisture when the action gets hot.
The sizing is the same as our Gringo and Bonanza helmets, so if you are familiar with the fit on those, it’ll be easy to find a comfortable Lane Splitter. With seven colors to choose from, there’s something to fit just about anyone’s style.
So, was it worth the wait? According to hooligan dirt tracker Mark “The Rusty Butcher” Atkins, hell yes. In fact, Mark was so impressed with our new helmet when he tested early prototypes, he made the switch to Lane Splitter for all his shenanigans. We like Mark so much that we worked together to develop our first Signature Series helmet that’ll be available sometime before the end of summer. Seven other distinct color ways are available now and a complete range of smoke, mirror and gradient tint shields will be available for customizing your Lane Splitter in a few weeks.
